Good morning, everyone.
Our verse for today comes from Acts 10:1, “There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Cohort.”
This weekend, pastor Greg Laurie broadcast an evangelical conference called A Rush of Hope. Originally planned to be held live and in person before the virus, this event was centered around three Christian movies that told stories of three powerful messages. Woodlawn was a movie about a high school football team in Alabama during the civil rights movement of the late 60’s, and I Can Only Imagine was about Bart Millard, who had a horrible childhood with an abusive dad, but went on to form the group MercyMe, reconcile with his dad who accepted Christ before dying from cancer, and write the hit song the film was named after. I Still Believe tells the story of singer Jeremy Camp. He fell in love in college, found out she had stage 3 cancer, asked her to marry him, and then discovered her cancer was gone just before she was going to have surgery. Unfortunately, the cancer returned shortly after the honeymoon and she died soon thereafter. But Melissa believed that if what she was going through could change one person, it would all be worth it. Some time later, Jeremy met Adrienne, who had heard Melissa’s story, and told Jeremy that she was the one person whose life had been transformed. Jeremy and Adrienne eventually marry, and part of their life mission has been to tell the story of hope in Jesus that Melissa believed in.
One person seems so insignificant, especially among the almost 8 billion in the world today. Cornelius was one of sixty centurions who, each with their 100 soldiers, combined to make up the 6,000-man Roman legion called the Italian Cohort, who were a small part of the entire Roman army. And in these thousands of thousands, one Gentile named Cornelius feared and honored God, and God used him to help revolutionize the spread of the gospel. The preachers, singers, and wives who want to share Jesus in the hope that even one person might hear and believe do so because God did. One person was never too few for Him. You are one person, and so is he or she. If you still believe, try and imagine what God might have in store for you and them in a time such as this.
As we seek Him today, try and make a difference in one person’s journey that God gives you the chance to take part in.
