Good morning, everyone.
Our verse for today comes from Acts 2:33, “Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.”
When a company puts a new management team in place, change is expected from those working for them. When citizens elect new government officials, supporters and opponents both know that things are going to be different. When a parent remarries after suffering through a death or divorce, the children realize quickly that the parenting styles of the new family member may be quite foreign compared to what they had known and been used to before. This newness that change brings with it goes on everywhere in all walks of life – when a student moves up a grade to a new class and teacher, a new pastor at church, new coach of the team, new ownership of your favorite restaurant, and so on. We expect it, we adjust to it, we deal with it. But nothing before or since has changed as much or been quite so new as when God’s Son lived, died, was living again, and then ascended into heaven. To use the current sports vernacular, that sequence of events was a one and done. And realizing the uniqueness of the occurrence and the power on display, Peter explains rather matter-of-factly that what is going on is exactly what is to be expected when the God of the universe kills and then resurrects and then exalts His Son into the heavens.
But before we get too high and mighty at the thickheaded audience before Peter, we must be honest about what we have come to expect from this same God of miracles and resurrections. How low have our sights been set when it comes to seeing God intervene and make His presence known? How distant has our relationship become to where we don’t ask God to move and awaken? To be sure, the first resurrection was not the last and only. For every knee to bow and every tongue confess, all who have gone on must return. God is not through, and He probably has much more in store if we could be found faithful and seeking and persevering. He poured out His Spirit, so we know He’s here. It’s that next step that has you in mind.
As we seek Him today, expect your God to do the things that He does. Just make sure you haven’t replaced Him with a lesser god of convenience.
Have a glorious Thursday.
