Good morning, friends.
Our verse for today comes from Acts 9:7, “And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one.”
When you were a kid, there was probably a time when you thought that climbing high up a mountain would put you in some pretty warm air. I mean, you had likely experienced the relative coolness of a basement and the oppressive heat of an attic. Somebody along the way had told you that hot air rises. So it would have made perfect sense that the closer you got to the sun, the warmer it would be. If you were already an adult before or as the computer and technological revolution overtook us, you no doubt heard that computers, and then cell phones, and now smart phones, would improve efficiency, increase productivity, and free up individuals to be able to work less and enjoy life more. Tasks would be accomplished in a fraction of the time they ordinarily took, and the hours saved could be spent however one desired. Well, your first trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains or points higher certainly set you straight about the atmosphere, and your morning, noon, and nights being filled with answering e-mails, sending texts, and working on spreadsheets regardless of where you’re sitting made it clear that work multiplies to fill the time allotted, even if it’s unnecessary and ultimately worthless. Nevertheless, it still seems plausible to the hopeful among us that all this technology should be improving the quality of our lives rather than working as a detriment.
But in the midst of one such as this, or any other, moment of consternation, something needs to come along that brings us resolution. If not, anxiety can multiply and dysfunction or worse can dominate your mind. You need something within that can bring you peace when things around you do not, like when Saul’s companions heard a voice but saw no one. When we are hearing one thing but seeing something else, whether it’s about the importance of the report we’re working on or the true intentions of those around us, without the anchor of God’s Word and our faith in Christ, the winds and waves of human wisdom and man’s explanations will beat away on our souls. Saul immediately bowed in obeisance to God, but his cohorts stood there, frozen and speechless. Which reaction will be yours when you encounter your next disconnect?
As we seek Him today, let Jesus make sense for you out of the nonsense that the world puts before you.
Have a marvelous Wednesday.
