Good morning, friends.
Our verse for today comes from John 2:5, “His mother said to the servants, ‘Whatever He says to you, do it.'”
My mom was special to me, as I’m sure yours is to you. One of the great things about a mom, in addition to the love and affection and encouragement they provide, is their knack for the turning of a phrase. No sooner have you thought of your mom and the memories come back of some of the great things she used to say to you. I used to love to wear worn out clothes to school. I had my favorite shirts that I wore as often as possible, and each one seemed to look worse than the next, at least in my mom’s point of view. But something about the holes in them made them look and feel just right, and gave them what I liked to call a “good hang.” But my mom used to hate it when I would head out looking like a bum, and she would invariably say to me, “If you had to wear those clothes, you wouldn’t do it.” And looking back on it now, she was probably right (isn’t that usually the case?). If I had no choice but to wear ratty clothes wherever I went, especially into a setting where I would already feel out of place, how horrified would I have been to show up looking like a hobo? But since I could pick and choose my outfits and my outings, I was perfectly content to look just as I did. And to her credit, mom didn’t lose her mind over trying to get me to dress in a way that might make her feel less embarrassed. She accepted it for what it was, and I’m pretty sure we didn’t miss out on any presidential invites because of my wardrobe selections.
The mother of Jesus didn’t say much that’s recorded in scripture, especially once Jesus began His three year journey to the cross. But what she said here, to the servants working this wedding reception, are captured with great intent. Now, it’s easy for us to hear Mary prescribe obedience to Jesus and nod our heads in agreement. Who would argue with that? But when the servants obeyed those simple commands, more occurred than people’s glasses keeping refilled and the host saving face. Scripture says the glory of Jesus was manifested. Will the same be said of you today?
As we seek Him today, play your part in the dance of Jesus commanding and His glory being manifested.
