Good morning, everyone.
Our verse for today comes from Acts 9:28, “So he went in and out among them at Jerusalem, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord.”
A long time ago, somewhere in the 23rd century, a man uttered this now famous little speech: “Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” If you are familiar with the television show Star Trek, then you know of its iconic title sequence and the crew that carried out that grand mission. You most likely recall some of the life forms they encountered in the far corners of the galaxy, such as the Iotians, who based their entire civilization on what they learned from a book called Chicago Mobs of the ‘20’s. You remember the Andorians, recognizable by their blue skin and classic alien antennae on their heads. There were also the Talosians, who communicated telepathically and had large skulls with pulsating veins. The Gorn were a race of giant lizards, and had a captain that unsuccessfully went toe-to-claw with Captain Kirk. The Tribbles were little balls of fur that reproduced by the thousands all throughout the ship. And then there were those whom the Enterprise encountered on a more regular, if somewhat less civil, basis, such as the Romulans and the Klingons. All along the way, Kirk and his crew boldly stretched the domain of human discovery, embracing the unknown, learning what they could and teaching what they thought necessary. In the process, relationships were formed, and lives were lost. It was thrilling, it was dangerous, and it was rewarding.
Going about boldly in today’s world elicits a certain response from those on the receiving end, a response that usually includes a certain look and a large amount of apprehension. Some will dismiss those reactions as they boldly fly their team colors or their party affiliation or their national pride or their sexual orientation. Others cannot get past the anxiety that being bold brings upon them, and so they choose to remain quiet. If we make it to the 23rd century, what will still exist that is worth being bold for? What will you have contributed to sustaining or erasing for future generations? What is your mission, and where is your frontier?
As we seek Him today, boldly go where you go every day, and carry the cause of Jesus which brings new life to civilizations.
