Good morning, everyone.
Our verse for today comes from Jeremiah 29:8, “For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are in your midst deceive you, nor listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed.”
In case you missed it, the Super Bowl was Sunday night. When I was a kid, I dreamed of being a professional athlete. I played sports all the time, whatever the season was. Baseball during the summer, football in the fall and winter, and basketball practically year round. But when I completed little league baseball, I gave up my dream of reaching the major leagues. I was a decent player, but I was never going to hit well enough or have enough power, and I was honestly too terrified of getting drilled by a wild pitch. Not too long thereafter, I laid to rest my dream of playing in the NFL. I could catch and throw pretty good, but my dad didn’t call me “skin and bones” for nothing. I was smallish in stature, and compared to the studs around me, getting smaller all the time. That left only basketball. It certainly was the sport I spent the most time practicing and playing. I worked on dribbling and shooting for hours at a time, going to the gym by myself or creating my own drills in the driveway. But even so, there were still too many things working against me, my lack of height and my propensity to remain close to the ground when I jumped, being two of them. So eventually, my last hope of playing sports for a living passed away.
My story is probably familiar to many of you. I know it’s relived in thousands of kids across this country each year. Only a select few make it to the top of the sports world, or any world for that matter. And that leaves a whole lot of you and me’s, somewhere else, doing something else. But it doesn’t mean we can’t dream, and it doesn’t mean we have no calling or purpose, or that God isn’t interested in us. It just means He’s interested in us doing something else, probably void of spotlights and big introductions. But not void of importance or impact. God wants His name lifted up right where you’re sitting. That’s His dream. Let’s take part in making that come true.
As we seek Him today, confess your heart if you’re disgruntled with where you are or what you have or what you do. Set your dreams on fulfilling God’s perfect plan for you.
Have an extra-large Wednesday.
