Good morning, friends.

Our verse for today comes from Acts 4:9, “If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed.”

I remember when I went back to college to take my accounting courses in preparation for my CPA license, that certain professors made a point of stressing the ability to communicate along with the need to master the skill of accounting. In their way of putting it, there would be no shortage of people who could handle the numbers part of the job. It would be the ones who could communicate most effectively the story that the numbers were telling that would stand out above the rest. Even in accounting, one must be able to give an account of what has happened and why. This responsibility weighs on us all as we go through the rigors of our day. Giving an account of what we have done and why we did it intersects our actions constantly, especially if we have detoured from the desired or expected path. Invariably someone is going to want us to give an account of what happened. As a result, we can oftentimes put as much energy into the crafting of the backstory as we can into the planning of the course of action. But as we are filling in the ledgers of our books, our Father desires to see in our accounts the actions and motives that produce the work of the King. His great joy is fulfilled when the balance is heavily weighted in favor of the fruit of the Spirit as generated by walking in that Spirit.

To that end, our minds, which have been transformed by that same Spirit, should be engaged in finding ways to allow the Spirit to live out its intentions. We should be actively seeking and planning to be kind, loving, faithful, and longsuffering. Our goals for the day should revolve around leaving an aroma of Jesus with the people who experience our joy, peace, goodness and self-control. Remember, God’s instruction for not fulfilling the desires of the flesh, those things that are against God and the intentions of the Spirit, is to walk in the Spirit. So if you need to better walk in the Spirit, be intentional about your plans for the King. And if you need to better carry out the work of the King, be intentional about doing the fruit of the Spirit. Both sides of the ledger matter, and this accounting has eternal value.

As we seek Him today, let your numbers start with one, as in doing one act of kindness for the glory of our Father.

Have a marvelous weekend.
