Good morning, friends.
Our verse for today comes from Psalm 27:4, “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.”
In preparing for a particular devotion, I have had at times an assortment of ideas that I was considering writing about. One had to do with some of my favorite sounds. Another incorporated several related incidents that occurred within minutes of each other on my drive into work. A third involved some humorous driving tendencies by certain types of motorists that I have noticed. At times I’ve considered writing about the superstitions that surround Friday the 13th. I even considered writing something about those little blue Smurfs. Needless to say, I have certainly considered a hodgepodge of ideas, hoping to strike a chord in our lives of God’s desire to draw us closer to Himself. But on this occasion, my thoughts went back to this verse in Psalm 27. In this psalm, David is beset with thoughts about various forms of harm that could come his way. As a man of action, he could strive and resist and act in any number of ways. He need not wait on anything or run from anyone. But even as he undoubtedly considered his options, as he thought through the hodgepodge of (apparent) solutions at his disposal, his one desire was to dwell with the Lord and behold His beauty. The answer that ensured for him the surest victory and the safest refuge, the path that promised life as God desired for it to be, was the singular path to the Lord.
We are no different than David, surrounded by stumbling blocks that Satan disguises as opportunities or pleasures or expectations. We have much from which to choose, from the insignificant to the critical. But they will take you only so far. We know it’s true. I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know. But knowing it and doing it are not the same. Knowing scripture can make you the most biblical person in hell. Doing scripture will open your eyes to the beauty of the Lord, while nurturing within you a further desire to do scripture. You will have a myriad of choices today, our society makes sure of that. See if you can keep your selections down to one.
As we seek Him today, examine all that you are desiring today. Truthfully weigh the value of what is on your list.
Have a spectacular Wednesday.
