Good morning, friends.

Our verse for today comes from Acts 8:35, “Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus.”

The Milliarium Aureum was a monument erected by Caesar Augustus in 20 BC. The monument, located in the central Forum of Ancient Rome, was considered to be the point at which all roads began and from which all distances were measured. The Milliarium Aureum, which is translated as Golden Milestone, was the probable focal point of the ancient saying that “All roads lead to Rome,” since all roads were considered to leave and return from this point in the center of the city. Its structure was probably like a marble column or cylinder, possibly twelve feet tall and four feet in diameter, and on it might have been inscribed the names of the most important cities of the Roman Empire and their distances from Rome, or perhaps simply the names of the roads that led out from this marker. Either way, Augustus made certain that every route and important distance was based on his Golden Milestone. So, any traveler along those distant roads would know when they saw a road marker that it was referring to a specific point in the most important city in the world.

In a not-so-unrelated way, Jesus is the Milliarium Aureum for those who follow Him, those who travel along the roads of life and take the journey through His scripture. In a very real way, everything we do, everything we encounter, should be in relation to our living monument who rose and conquered death. Every verse that we read in His Word should direct our hearts to His Kingship and cause us to consider Him in light of what we read. He alone is the standard by which all else is measured. He is the generous provider of all that we have. He is the only hope we have of eternity. His Spirit is the only power that can enable us to live obediently and please our Father. And unlike the remaining fragments of the monument of Caesar, Jesus is alive and well, seated on high and still the central point of the universe. His kingdom was not temporary nor constructed by men’s hands. So, your greatest good, and best journey, is still to keep your eyes focused on Him.

As we seek Him today, put all that you encounter in relation to the One who lives within you.

Have a super Wednesday.
