Good morning, friends.

Our verse for today comes from Acts 7:40, “Saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’”

Each of us has several thousand taste buds in our mouth. But just as our skin continually gets replaced by new layers about once a month, our taste buds also do not last our entire life. In fact, your taste buds make it only about ten days. So, what you are tasting today will be tasted by new buds come March. And as we age, the ability for our taste buds to be replaced decreases. By the age of forty, about 20% of us report that our sense of taste has changed. What is amazing, though, is just how rare it is for someone to actually suffer from Ageusia, which is the inability to detect any taste at all. And, when so many of us seem to notice that we can’t taste things like we should or that foods aren’t as good as they normally are, what we are really suffering from is a loss of smell. But all told, of the five senses, we would probably agree that taste gets about as little attention as it could. Most of our foods taste like we expect them to, and only when something is surprisingly wonderful or disgusting do our taste buds get noticed. We take for granted that we will enjoy our meals as much as we always have, but when we are suffering from a cold, we hate that we can’t taste anything we eat.

But when it comes to our sight, every waking moment is affected by our ability to see. We rely on that sense almost as much as we count on our lungs and our heart, so much so that we trust what we see and what we think we see more than things that could be deeply written on our hearts. And such was the issue that the Hebrews had when Moses spent those many days up on Mount Sinai with God. Even though God Almighty had delivered them from bondage and was taking them to the land and future He had promised them, once the sight of Moses had left them for a little while, their hearts quickly succumbed to the need to see in front of them something that they could follow and worship. And in their idiocy they asked Aaron to make them some gods that they could see and follow. As our nose and tongue are closely connected, so are our eyes and heart. Be careful what you see and what you think you need to see. The images are touching your heart, and they will leave an impression.

As we seek Him today, remind yourself that what you see is not what you get, and don’t let your heart get tied to what it sees.

Have a superb Wednesday.
